The Diagnostic Fee

A three-act Broadway show tune in which a slick service advisor (tenor) opens with a "free check vs. diagnostic" con-man recitative, a furious customer (soprano) enters as the key crashes to minor, a deadpan manager quotes the laminated card, and the full SATB choir erupts into a fortissimo one-star finale — total bill: $189, unrepaired.

The check-engine light was on. The service advisor waved you in with a smile. The word "free" was spoken clearly, sincerely, with eye contact. Two hours later you were standing at a counter holding a nine-page printout and a bill for $189 — and the car hadn't been touched.
Episode 6 of Yelp Review the Musical turns that parking-lot moment into a three-act show tune. Act I belongs to the service advisor: a smooth parlando over solo piano, the con-man patter of a man who genuinely believes the distinction between a "complimentary multi-point visual survey" and a "comprehensive diagnostic procedure" is self-evident to any reasonable person. He's charming. He means it. That's what makes it so maddening.
Act II is the collision. The soprano enters mid-phrase, cutting across the tenor's logic with the raw precision of someone who has been through this before and is not going to be talked out of what she heard. The argument escalates from spoken word to full orchestral chaos — a fourteen-point inspection report becoming a recurring motif as both voices try to out-sing each other over brass stabs and a string section that has clearly taken sides. The manager arrives with a laminated card and the flat affect of a man who has done this speech four hundred times and expects it to work a four hundred and first.
The finale is the customer's. The pit orchestra erupts at full force, the SATB choir piles in from all sides, and what started as a polite question about a check-engine light ends exactly where it always ends: in a parking lot, on a phone, one star, posted. The Civic drove fine on the way home. That's the whole joke. That's the whole tragedy.
